In 2007 after several years as W.I. members the ladies of Petrockstowe decided to break away and form “A Ladies Group” This decision was made as a result of the W.I. increasing membership costs and the requests to help fund other local charities.
The Ladies Group meet on the fourth Tuesday at 7.30pm each month in the village hall when we have a variety of interesting speakers, demonstrations and tasting evenings all paid for by yearly subscriptions.
For the first two years, we as a group, financially supported some local charities: Shelter Box, Devon Air Ambulance and the RNLI. It soon became apparent that within our own village there was a need to financially support the three main buildings – St Petroc’s Church, the Chapel and Village Hall. So, after two years ,we made a decision to change our focus to offer support to the village amenities. We do this by holding fund raising activities. These occasions are well supported by villagers, visitors and residents of surrounding areas. Our fund raisers include community breakfasts, coffee mornings, vintage teas , quizzes and we also hold a “Pimms” afternoon (ladies only), a punch and pie evening, carol singing as well as make and sell a variety of cakes and home made produce at fetes and rallies. We also are supporters of the regular Macmillan Cancer Support morning held each year in September.
It is without doubt a wonderful village to live in with a very active, supportive and generous community who appreciate just what the Ladies Group represents. It is due to the time effort and generosity of our ladies that at the end of each year we are able to hand over a sizeable cheque to the village Church, Chapel and Hall all of which goes towards the maintenance and general upkeep of each building which in turn helps to enhance the quality of life in our lovely village.
We are always so pleased to welcome new members, it is certainly a good way to meet other ladies in the village and it is a good introduction to the Petrockstowe way of life.
